In 1948, Alf Thompson met with 750 people at the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations at the
Commodore Hotel in New York City to initiate plans for a national organization of overseas Red Cross
personnel. In 1949, the MTO convention was held in Cleveland OH and a national organization was
formed. The first AOA convention was formally held in Philadelphia PA in 1950.
American Red Cross Overseas Association (ARCOA) is a 501(c)4 non-profit organization.
